In mediaeval times and later, it was the custom every Midsummer night, for a garland to be hung up at the door and watched till the next morning by the alms-men, in memory of St John the Baptist. Thanks to a bequest by the late Lady May Thornton, this custom had been restored and a garland of fresh flowers is hung on the 24th June, St John the Baptist’s Day.
